Research at the House Ear Institute

In 1999, Dr. Teufert came to Los Angeles to join the House Ear Institute — a world-renowned center for the study and treatment of ear disorders, founded by Dr. Howard House and home to some of the most significant advances in otologic and skull base surgery of the past century. What began as a visiting physician role quickly grew into a long-term research scholar position spanning more than eight years, working alongside leading figures including Dr. Antonio de la Cruz, Dr. Fred Linthicum Jr., Dr. Derald Brackmann, and Dr. William Slattery, across neurotology, temporal bone histopathology, cochlear implantation, congenital aural atresia, Menière’s disease, and skull base surgery.

Publications & academic contributions

Dr. Teufert is the author or co-author of more than 16 peer-reviewed articles and over 10 book chapters in major ORL and skull base surgery references, including Cummings Otolaryngology: Head & Neck Surgery and Otologic Surgery, Third Edition. She has presented her research at the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting, the American Neurotology Society, the American Otological Society, and the Pan American Association of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery — and has served as a reviewer for Brain Research Reviews and as a session chair at international congresses.

Continuing research & collaboration

Dr. Teufert has continued her academic work beyond her years as a full-time research scholar, returning to national and international meetings to present research initiated at the House Ear Institute and collaborating with colleagues at HEI and UCLA. Her commitment to advancing the science of otolaryngology remains central to her practice.

Clinical philosophy

Dr. Teufert believes that every patient deserves access to the same quality of clinical thinking that has shaped her academic career. Telemedicine makes that possible — bringing rigorous, research-informed otolaryngology care directly to patients, regardless of where they are. She conducts consultations in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, and is particularly committed to serving patients in Brazil, where she trained and where her deepest professional roots remain.
